Volunteers that feel like family
Silvia has been volunteering in aged care for close to a year through the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme, paying regular visits to 98-year-old Michael.
‘When I first met Michael, he told me he stays in bed most days and missed going to his local cafe where the staff knew him and his coffee order. Now that’s exactly what we do together to get him out and about. I make sure to give him enough notice so he has time to dress up in his suit and tie.
‘We chat about our lives. He likes telling me stories of when he was young and I love hearing them. Making a difference to someone’s day is the best feeling. I love talking to Michael and watching his face light up when he sees me.‘
Silvia and her immediate family moved to Australia from Mexico 16 years ago and miss their family back home. So, for special celebrations like Michael’s birthday it’s often a whole family affair, with Silvia’s family coming along to deliver cakes and presents.
‘I really like giving a little bit back to the community. Hopefully when I’m older someone does the same for me. If you’re thinking about volunteering, give it a go - you won’t regret it!’
