Aged care volunteer stories – Linda

Linda is a Lifestyle Services Specialist at Bolton Clarke. She opens up about the benefits of engaging volunteers to support aged care residents.

'I have worked in residential aged care and community aged are for more than 20 years on the Gold Coast. I have always been a passionate promoter of the benefits of engaging volunteers to support the program and residents.

'When managing a volunteer program, prioritise making the time for the volunteers. This means taking the time to connect with them, to check in and communicate any changes. It also means supporting and guiding them through the unfamiliar environment of residential aged care. Providing acknowledgment and validation are also essential.

'The thing I love the most about managing volunteers is the endless array of opportunities for engagement with residents and the heartfelt interactions that occur when we make a connection with an isolated resident and a volunteer. It is great to see the difference that interaction makes for the residents’ feelings of self-worth and self-esteem, not only for that day but for the days that follow. To watch the bond form between two people is priceless. It 100% proves you can make new friends at any age.'

Linda truly appreciates the aged care volunteers at Bolton Clarke.

'Volunteers have given our residents and lifestyle programs new and stimulating ideas. They have afforded us the ability to create wonderful events that without their support and time would have been much less.

'They come from a variety of backgrounds – we have business owners, flight attendants, school principals, psychologists, mums, church representatives and so many more. They bring a range of skills, experience and enthusiasm. Having access to this diversity clearly demonstrates that community engagement in aged care creates positive experiences and outcomes.

'Social connection is something that even our most private residents miss – that feeling of being important and being valued. Contributing to and engaging in life are the most amazing benefits residents receive from having volunteers involved in their life.'

Make a positive impact to older people in your community by finding an aged care volunteering opportunity for you.
