The benefits of volunteering as an international student
Cherry began volunteering in aged care when she partnered with Benetas, Broughton Hall during the semester break at university.
‘I thought volunteering would be an amazing way to learn about Aussie culture while giving to society.
‘I fondly remember the happy faces on residents whenever they saw a familiar face! I had the honour to hear various life stories from the residents and formed precious bonds.
‘I participated and assisted the residents with their activities such as walking with them in the mornings, playing games, serving them tea and chatting with them.’
Cherry recommends volunteering in aged care, especially to those studying abroad.
‘As an international student, I often felt lonely and did not quite relate to Aussie culture. Volunteering in aged care allowed me to make many new friends and I’ve learnt lots from their wisdom. I also felt happy when I saw the residents happy, it gave me a sense of purpose.
‘Volunteering also taught me how to interact with senior residents with dementia. I believe it is an important skill and knowledge to have.’
Make a positive impact to older people in your community by finding aged care volunteering opportunities.
