Aged care volunteer story – Louka

For Louka volunteering is more than just spending time with elders in his community, it is an extension of his parents' legacy.

The variety of ways you can volunteer to bring joy to older people

Louka is a dedicated volunteer musician who brings joy to the Greek Community at Fronditha Care through his weekly performances. With a strong family connection to the organisation, both his parents were long-time volunteers.  Louka continues their legacy by sharing his love of music with older residents.

“Both my parents were prominent members of the Greek Community, volunteering for Fronditha Care for many decades. They told me how rewarding it is to be a volunteer and be of help to elders. They told me, above all, about the unconditional love you receive.”

“Every week, I visit Fronditha Care, play music, sing and dance with the residents. Seeing these older people singing and dancing with so much joy, makes me smile and fills me with untold emotion which often move me to tears.”

As part of the Fronditha Social Support Groups Louka visits facilities to play his accordion, sing, and engage with residents. His performances often include traditional songs, and he’s always open to learning new ones based on residents’ requests.

“I get requests for songs that are new to me and even though I haven’t played them before, I know that they are a significant reminder of the past for the residents, and I do my best to play them.”

“Volunteering is exceptionally fulfilling. The people you meet, the stories you hear and the lessons you learn are invaluable. And through my own volunteering I have a better understanding of the passion of my parents to contribute to the community”

“I know they are looking down on me with pride that I have continued to build on their legacy.

Louka plans to keep volunteering for as long as he can, using music to bring people together and strengthen community bonds.

Make a positive impact to older people in your community by finding an aged care volunteering opportunity for you.
