Volunteering for Connection: Supporting Men’s Wellbeing in Residential Aged Care
Kevin volunteers weekly for Bolton Clarke "Cazna Gardens" at Sunnybank Hills, Brisbane, Qld.
When chronic pain ended Kevin James’ nursing career, he found a new mission—bringing connection and camaraderie to men in aged care. After years of service as a Registered Nurse and Occupational Health Consultant, he suddenly found himself battling isolation, depression, and a loss of purpose.
“I felt alienated, angry, and helpless,” Kevin recalls. “The hardest part was the social isolation. I’d gone from helping others every day to being stuck inside my own four walls.”
But Kevin didn’t stay there, he began volunteering at Bolton Clarke’s “Cazna Gardens” in Sunnybank Hills, Brisbane. What started as a weekly visit quickly grew into a life-changing mission.
Each week, Kevin facilitates round-table social sessions with elderly male residents—creating a space for storytelling, laughter, and connection.
“We talk about the highs and lows of life—growing up, working, raising families. It’s a safe, supportive environment where men can open up. The connection is psychologically healthy for both the residents and volunteers.”
Kevin’s impact extends far beyond one facility. As Secretary of Circle of Men Inc., a small not-for-profit in South East Queensland, he helps coordinate male volunteers across 16 aged care homes. He handles everything from compliance and police checks to social media and recruitment.
“Our mission is simple: to help create an environment for the well-being and happiness of men in aged care. And we need more men to join us.”
“Volunteering gave me back my sense of purpose. It’s uplifting and rewarding. I’ve reconnected with others who’ve lived through similar experiences—and that’s been a huge boost to my mental health.”
His message to other men?
“Get out of the house. Talk to someone. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel. There are so many men in aged care who are in their most vulnerable stage of life. Just showing up can make a world of difference.”
Kevin’s story is a powerful reminder that healing often comes from human connection.
