Billing under Medicare
To bill under Medicare, allied health professionals must:
- Meet the qualification and registration requirements as set out in the Health Insurance (Section 3C General Medical Services – Allied Health Services) Determination 2024
- be recognised by Services Australia as an allied health professional in their field
- be in private practice and working in a private capacity
- have a Medicare provider number to bill for services listed on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS).
Services Australia has Medicare information for allied health professionals, including eligibility requirements and guides on bulk billing. Its Health Professional Education Resources Gateway also has guides on MBS items for allied health professionals.
Prescribing under the PBS
PBS Online has information for Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) prescribers, including allied health professionals.
Providing services under the MBS
MBS Online lists the Medicare services subsidised by the Australian Government and available to allied health professionals.
