Optometrist

This example profile outlines how an associated provider is considered under the Aged Care Act 2024.

What we know about Murad

  • Murad is an optometrist.
  • Murad sometimes provides private services to older people in residential aged care facilities.
  • Murad does not provide services under any government-funded aged care programs.
  • Murad is not affiliated with any registered aged care providers.

Associated provider consideration under the Act

  • Murad is not considered an aged care worker or associated provider and therefore is not regulated under the new Act.
  • Murad practices within aged care settings but does not provide services under the Aged Care Service List, which determines the services that are regulated in the aged care system.
  • As Murad is not an aged care worker he will not be regulated under the worker screening requirements for aged care workers.
  • However, Murad will have requirements as part of his professional body membership under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) which relate to worker screening and ongoing professional development.
  • Murad will be required to deliver services and work within his scope of practice and training when delivering private services to older people within residential aged care. The registered aged care provider may request Murad’s professional qualifications when visiting the facility to be satisfied that services will be safe and of high quality.

What this means for Murad

The new Act will benefit Murad through:

  1. Providing a safer care culture: The new Act sets a quality benchmark and promotes rights-based high-quality care across all aged care settings.
  2. Training and support: Publicly available eLearning modules and resources help professionals, carers and volunteers apply best-practice care.
  3. Safety assurance: Services delivered to older people under the new Act must be safe and of high quality, in line with the registered provider’s requirements under the Aged Care Quality Standards.
  4. Broader influence: Principles of dignity and respect shape standards beyond aged care.
