Obligations under the Bonded Medical Program

Learn about the core obligations as a Bonded Medical Program participant and how to maintain your BRoSS record.

Your responsibilities

The Program provides students a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) in a medical course at an Australian university. This is in return for a commitment to work in eligible regional, rural and remote areas for 156 weeks (3 years) after the completion of their medical course. You must self-report your obligations using Bonded Return of Service System (BRoSS) for the return of service against this commitment.

As a Program participant, you are responsible for:

Program requirements include:

  • maintaining your current contact details by logging into BRoSS at least every 6 months
  • recording any notifiable events (key study and career milestones) and uploading evidence in BRoSS within 6 months of the event occurring – if these events occurred before you opted in to the Program, you must update your details and upload evidence in BRoSS within 6 months of the opt in date
  • planning, activating and completing RoSO activities – including uploading evidence into BRoSS, for any eligible work you wish to count towards your RoSO.

If you cannot provide the required evidence for a notifiable event advisory or a RoSO activity, you may provide a statutory declaration. It must include all the required information as specified in the Rule, and explain why you did not provide the required evidence.

Once you have met all the Program requirements, we will notify you that you have completed the Program.

Completion evidence

Your completion evidence must confirm that you have completed work in accordance with your RoSO plan in BRoSS.

Your completion evidence must be either:

  • a signed letter from your employer dated after your RoSO plan completion date
  • a statutory declaration dated after your RoSO plan completion date.

Do not include

Please do not provide the following as evidence:

  • payslips
  • timesheets
  • rosters
  • invoices
  • Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) provider activity data
  • unsigned or undated letters
  • letters or statutory declarations dated before the RoSO plan completion date.

Include

Completion evidence must detail:

  • your name
  • confirmation of your RoSO plan commencement date
    • your actual employment commencement date if you start a new role
    • the date you start working in an eligible location if your role requires you to work across multiple facilities
    • the date you return to your ongoing role after a period of non-eligible leave
    • the date your employment varies, which requires you to record a new RoSO plan (e.g. switching from full time to part time).
  • confirmation of your RoSO plan completion date, which may be
    • your actual employment completion date if you leave the role
    • the date you stop working in an eligible location and move to an ineligible location if your role requires you to work across multiple facilities
    • the date you begin a period of leave that is not eligible for RoSO
    • the date your employment varies, which requires you to record a new RoSO plan (e.g. switching from full time to part time)
    • confirmation the role is ongoing if you remain in the role, but are completing a RoSO plan in BRoSS to be assessed for Program completion.
  • position name
  • employer name
  • employer address
  • your work location(s) – if you worked in multiple locations or provided telehealth or aeromedical services, please include the address of every eligible work location
  • number of RoSO-eligible hours worked each week – if your hours have varied, or if you have recorded your work as a per day plan, please confirm the actual hours and days worked for the duration of your plan
  • any periods of leave which cannot be counted towards RoSO.

If providing a statutory declaration, use this format to list multiple RoSO events:

DD/MM/YYYY to DD/MM/YYYY at [location name] (location adddress including state and postcode) as a [position title] for xx hours per week. This was prevocational training/work for [employer name].

Updating your details

Keeping your contact details up to date will ensure you do not miss important communications about your program obligations.

Access 'My Program information' in BRoSS to update your record if you change your:

  • name
  • address
  • phone number
  • email address, especially if you are no longer accessing your university email address.

If you are changing your name or date of birth, you will need to upload appropriate supporting evidence in BRoSS.
