Aged care research and reporting

We do research to understand how the aged care system is performing and identify any issues.

About our research and reports

We base policy decisions on research and data. We commission research and collect data to:

  • understand how the aged care system is performing
  • identify any issues
  • make sure we have the information we need to make better decisions.

We report every year to Parliament on the operation of the Aged Care Act 1997 and publish research reports on how the aged care system is working.

We have also worked with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) to create GEN Aged Care Data, a website that provides detailed data on aged care services in Australia.

The report on the operation of Aged Care Act 1997 (ROACA) details the operation of Australia’s aged care system during each financial year.

It includes information on the:

  • systems and resources available for older people to access aged care
  • types of aged care services
  • help available for people with diverse needs
  • contribution to aged care workforce measures
  • quality and regulation requirements in aged care.
