Consultation to develop the quality indicators
We have consulted extensively with the sector and aged care experts to develop the quality indicators, including through:
- an evidence-based literature review
- national stakeholder consultations, both virtual and written
- expert consultations
- testing with providers and stakeholders
- trials in aged care services.
New staffing quality indicators for residential aged care
We completed public consultation on 3 new staffing quality indicators for residential aged care in June 2024.
Almost 70 residential aged care providers took part in a 6-week pilot to test these indicators.
The consultation and pilot showed overall support for quality indicators for nursing, allied health and lifestyle services.

We engaged HealthConsult to run a 12-week pilot from early October 2024 to test the proposed quality indicators. Outcomes of the consultation and pilot will inform recommendations on the implementation of the QI Program for Support at Home.
Reviewing the QI Program
We’ve engaged Nous Group to review the 14 quality indicators. Nous is currently consulting with the aged care sector on the quality indicators for residential aged care.
Development of an aged care allied health needs assessment tool
We have partnered with HealthConsult to develop a new assessment tool for allied health needs in residential aged care. This tool will help providers consistently recognise and assess residents' needs for allied health services.
