How to apply for the Bonded Medical Program

Learn about how to apply for a bonded place at university.

Apply to study medicine

Participating universities manage all applications and bonded Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) offers. You must meet the same entrance requirements as any other student applying for a medical place.

After you submit your application to study medicine, the participating university determines the selection process for a bonded CSP. If you need more information on the application processes, please contact the relevant university directly. They can tell you more about when a prospective student will be offered a bonded CSP rather than a non-bonded place in their medical course.

Please note that the Bonded Medical Program is not a scholarship, and the CSP does not cover the full course fees. The remaining cost is called the student contribution amount. This can either be paid upfront or deferred via a HECS-HELP loan if you are eligible.

Obligations under the Program

The conditions and requirements of the Program are legally binding. Participants who agree to participate in the Program are bound by:

Program participants are required to complete a 3-year (156 week) Return of Service Obligation (RoSO) in regional, rural and remote areas in Australia within 18 years of completing their medical course. The 18-year period was chosen to allow for flexibility in taking periods of leave or undertaking work or training in ineligible locations.

While a participant of the Program, you are required to maintain your Bonded Return of Service System (BRoSS) record. This includes recording your key study and career milestones, or 'notifiable events'.

For work to count towards a reduction in your RoSO, you must provide evidence of eligible work, completed in eligible locations, in your RoSO within BRoSS.

Accepting a place in the Bonded Medical Program

If you accept a bonded CSP in a course of study in medicine at an Australian university, you must:

  • agree to participate in the Program
  • meet the Program statutory obligations.

You should seek legal advice to make sure you understand the terms and conditions before accepting a bonded CSP at university.

You must agree to participate in the Bonded Medical Program by 30 June in your first year of study. To register your agreement, you will need to use BRoSS.
