Location
You do not need to live in, or be from, a rural or remote area to be eligible for the Program.
Citizenship
You must be Australian citizens or permanent visa holders to apply for a place in the Program. New Zealand citizens who hold a Special Category Visa (subclass 444) are not eligible to apply for the Program until they attain their Australian citizenship or permanent visa holder status.
Pathways
There are 2 pathways to enter the Bonded Medical Program:
- As a student who has been offered, and accepted, a bonded Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) in a medical course at an Australian university.
- As an existing Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship Scheme or Bonded Medical Places (BMP) Scheme participant you can opt in to the Program at any point. If you choose to opt in to the Program, your Return of Service Obligation (RoSO) will automatically be reduced to 3 years and all RoSO worked and approved under the BMP Scheme will be credited 1:1. Once your transition to the Program is finalised, you become a participant of the Program and cease to be a participant of your legacy scheme.
