Why major sports events matter
Major sporting events drive tourism and trade to Australia and enhance our international reputation. They also inspire Australians to engage with their community and get physically active.
Sport 2030 identifies the benefits of hosting major sporting events, including:
- tourism – international, interstate and intrastate
- trade – both direct and indirect business activity generated by sporting events
- employment – event organisers, commercial partners and service providers
- infrastructure – legacy benefits of new and improved stadiums, sporting, transport and other public facilities
- gender equality – creating fair, safe and inclusive opportunities in, and through, sport
- communities – uniting people, strengthening local communities and instilling national pride
- participation – creating role models who motivate and inspire children and adults to be active and play sport.
Hosting major events is a key part of Australia’s Sports Diplomacy 2030 strategy.

Seeking Commonwealth support
Sporting organisations and host cities often need our help to successfully bid for a major sporting event. They may also need support to prepare for and host the event.
When a sporting organisation applies for any amount of Commonwealth funding for a major international sporting event, the government considers proposals through a formal budget process.
Every proposal is assessed on the event’s ability to meet requirements which identify if the event:
- is of national significance
- is feasible
- provides an appropriate return on investment and
- delivers broad legacy benefits for the Australian community and our region.
Organisations must also provide an event budget and other event planning documentation that demonstrates the need for Commonwealth financial support. These documents will form part of the funding proposal.
It is important to engage the government early if you are considering bidding for a major international sporting event and seeking Commonwealth support.
