Why major sports events matter
Hosting major sporting events enhances Australia's international reputation. It also inspires Australians to take up a sport and get active.
Sporting organisations and host cities often need our help to successfully bid for a major sporting event. They may also need support to prepare for and host the event.
Sport 2030 identifies the benefits of hosting major sporting events, including:
-
tourism – international, interstate and intrastate
-
trade – both direct and indirect business activity generated by sporting events
-
employment – event organisers, commercial partners, service providers
-
infrastructure – legacy benefits of new and improved stadiums, sporting, transport and other public facilities
-
gender equality – creating fair, safe and inclusive opportunities in, and through, sport
-
communities – uniting people, strengthening local communities and instilling national pride
-
participation – creating role models who motivate and inspire children and adults to be active and play sport.
Hosting major events is a key part of Australia’s Sports Diplomacy 2030 strategy.
Bidding for a major sporting event
A major sporting event is one that generates significant interest, has a high profile, or attracts visitors to Australia.
Organisations planning to bid to host a major sporting event in Australia should contact the Office for Sport. Early engagement is crucial as we may be able to help.
If the event is not a major sporting event, support may be available from the relevant state or territory government.
