In November 2023, we engaged Nous Consortium to undertake the National Review of First Nations Health Care in Prisons. This report presents evidence and recommendations for systemic reform to improve health care for First Nations people in places of detention and on release.

The report presents 6 recommendations on the opportunities for systemic reform by all jurisdictions: 

  • a set of national reform principles to drive action (Recommendation 1)
  • investigations to identify and address concerning practices in custodial facilities (Recommendation 2)
  • a national partnership agreement (Recommendation 3) and an accompanying national program of work (Recommendation 4)
  • greater involvement of the ACCHS sector in the policy, design and delivery of custodial health services (Recommendation 5)
  • piloting alternative, therapeutic models of custody (Recommendation 6).

Health Ministers’ have released a joint statement in response to the review.
