What you need to do
If you accept a bonded Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) in a course of study in medicine at an Australian university, you must agree to participate in the Bonded Medical Program (Program) by 30 June in your first year of study. If you do not agree to participate by 30 June in your first year of study, your Bonded CSP offer will be rescinded.
If you choose to enrol in the Program, you are legally bound by:
We recommend you seek legal advice to ensure you understand your obligations before agreeing to participate.
You must register your agreement to participate through the Bonded Return of Service System (BRoSS). BRoSS is our web portal that helps you plan, monitor and manage your Return of Service Obligation (RoSO) under the Program.
Once you agree to be a participant in the Program you can withdraw at any time, but you will forfeit your place in your medical course. Universities are prohibited from transferring students to unencumbered CSP or a full fee paying place.
As a medical student, you must:
- log into BRoSS every 12 months to update your details, such as a change in email address. If you are using a student email address, please enter a secondary email address
- update your medical course timeframe when changes occur, such as deferring or repeating a semester. This will also require you to update your ‘Internship training starting date goal’ in your 'Completion of medical course' advisory
- register at least one RoSO plan in BRoSS after the completion of your medical course
- update your 'Completion of medical course' advisory once you graduate and provide your internship commencement details
- report key study and career milestones.
You are responsible for ensuring your BRoSS record is kept up to date.
How to register your initial RoSO plan in BRoSS
As a participating you must register at least one RoSO plan in BRoSS after the completion of your medical course.
While you may not be certain where you intend to undertake RoSO, you must still record a ‘placeholder’ RoSO plan. This mandatory requirement is detailed in section 16(1) of the Rule.
You must create at least one RoSO plan which can start from your internship onwards. You can update this RoSO plan at any point. For this plan to convert to credited RoSO, you must activate it and complete, with evidence uploaded.
Withdrawing from the program
If you withdraw or are discontinued from your medical course at any time before completing your degree, you will not have to repay the cost of your CSP.
