Coverage under the Allied Health Exceptional Claims Scheme (AHECS)

The AHECS covers the costs of eligible claims once they exceed an eligible allied health professional’s indemnity cover limit.

When allied health professionals are covered

The AHECS only covers allied health professionals when they are eligible.

What AHECS covers

Types of costs covered

AHECS payments can cover:

  • damages amounts to patients
  • legal costs
  • administrative costs related to managing the claim
  • costs incurred by the indemnity insurer in managing an incident, which may or may not become a claim.

Amount covered

The AHECS only covers costs once they exceed the allied health professional’s insurance cover.

Example of amount covered

An allied health professional has insurance cover of up to $20 million.

A patient makes a malpractice claim against the health professional. The damages amount and other claim costs add up to $100 million.

The insurer covers the first $20 million in claim costs. The AHECS covers the remaining $80 million.

What AHECS does not cover

The AHECS does not provide cover if the claim costs are below or equal to the eligible allied health professional’s cover limit. For these claims, the indemnity insurer may be able to access the Allied Health High Cost Claims Scheme.
