Elite and high-performance sport
Our champion athletes are role models and a major influence in our goal to be the world’s most active nation.
Elite and high-performance athletes showcase the highest levels of skill, mastery and competitiveness. They inspire the community to get active, which:
creates a solid base for developing high-performance talent
builds commitment to a lifelong appreciation of sport
provides the broader benefits of being healthy and active.
Funding elite sport
The Australian Government, through Sport Australia and the Australian Institute of Sport, provides annual high-performance funding to National Sporting Organisations.
National High Performance Sport Strategy
The National High Performance Sport Strategy 2024 supports the Sport 2030 plan’s aim to achieve sporting excellence.
It provides a unified approach to high-performance and elite sport in Australia. Its focus is on success at Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth games.
The Minister for Sport released the strategy in November 2019.
Protecting the integrity of elite sport
Elite sport is an important part of Australian life. Doping scandals and match-fixing reduce our confidence that sport is clean and fair. We are actively working to protect sport in Australia from such threats.
