Review for the inclusion of audiometrists as allied health professionals for limited audiology items

About the review

In March 2025, the MRAC  commenced a review, requested by the Australian College of Audiology (ACAud), seeking the inclusion of audiometrists as allied health professionals to access limited audiology MBS items.

This review will be undertaken by the full committee.

Why the review is important

This review will assess patient access to a limited number of audiology diagnostic MBS items through the consideration of the appropriateness of existing MBS services and all other complementary services available. .

Status

In May 2024, the ACAud submitted a proposal, seeking the review of audiology health services under the MBS to allow audiometrists access to selected MBS items. .

The review proposal was presented to the MRAC for consideration at their 4 March 2025 meeting. MRAC agreed to commence the review and determined the review would be undertaken as a full committee.

At the 19 August 2025 meeting, the review formally commenced, with MRAC considering the scope of the review and commencement of targeted consultation.

This review will undergo both targeted and open consultation processes.
