You are not alone
Caring for someone with a bladder or bowel problem can be difficult. Problems like incontinence can be unpredictable, increase your workload and cost a lot.
In 2015 there were 2.7 million unpaid carers in Australia. As a carer you may feel overwhelmed, frustrated and angry at times. However, you are not alone. There are services available to help you and the person you are caring for.
Some things you can do to help the person you are caring for include:
- try to be calm and patient – talk openly together about the situation
- try to accept that it may be embarrassing or uncomfortable at times
- understand that accidents may happen from time to time
- look after yourself too – plan regular breaks
Some practical suggestions for managing bladder and bowel issues are:
- use continence products
- plan your journey or activities using the toilet map
- use support services
- see a doctor or health professional if you have any concerns about the person you are caring for
