Psychogeriatric Assessment Scales (PAS) User Guide

PAS helps aged care providers to carry out psychogeriatric assessments for dementia and depression. You do not need extensive training to use it. To do a PAS assessment, you interview the care recipient and someone who knows the recipient well, such as a carer or relative.

You can use PAS to assess people for the major psychogeriatric disorders — dementia and depression. It assesses them on scales rather than as categories.

PAS is designed to help a wider range of people to carry out psychogeriatric assessments. You do not need extensive training to use it.

The PAS is made up of two sections:

  • subject interview — your care recipient, client or patient
  • informant interview — a relative, carer or other person who knows the subject well

The two interviews give different perspectives on the subject’s functioning.
