Aged care design ideas competition now open

The Reimagining Where We Live design ideas competition is now open for architects and designers to design an innovative aged care home and showcase what can be achieved with the Australian Government’s new Design Principles and Guidelines for aged care homes.

The competition will test the new draft National Aged Care Design Principles and Guidelines, which support aged care providers to better meet the needs of aged care residents.

The guidelines encourage designs that create welcoming, safe, dementia-friendly environments that promote independence, enjoyment and a sense of community and belonging for older people.

This is a great opportunity for architects and designers to use the Design Principles and Guidelines to showcase great design ideas and how they can improve:

  • quality of life for older people
  • the working environments of the people who care for them.

The Australian Institute of Architects and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects have endorsed the competition.

The competition closes at 12pm (noon) AEDT on 15 December 2023. Judging will take place in February 2024, with winners announced by end April 2024.

The draft National Aged Care Design Principles and Guidelines were developed following extensive consultation with older people, their families and carers. They will be introduced from 1 July 2024.
