Star ratings for residential aged care
Star ratings can help consumers make more informed choices about their aged care by providing meaningful information about the quality of services. We are developing a star ratings system for residential aged care across Australia and expect them to be available from the end of 2022.
About the program
We will publish star ratings for all residential aged care services that are based on measurable indicators of quality and available data.
This information will support senior Australians, families, friends and carers compare services to make informed choices on care options.
Residential aged care services will have an overall star rating, as well as against 4 sub-categories:
- five quality indicators
- service compliance ratings
- consumer experience
- staff care minutes.
We will continue to enhance star ratings as more data becomes available, and based on government decisions.
Why ratings are important
The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety (Royal Commission) highlighted the need for information about service quality to be available for people seeking and receiving aged care.
The Royal Commission recommended developing and publishing a star ratings system based on measurable information. Star ratings will help senior Australians and their families to compare the quality and safety performance of different services and providers.
Benefits of the program
Star ratings can deliver a range of benefits, these include:
- consumers will be able to make more informed choices about their aged care
- providers will improve the quality of services provided to consumers
- government will be able to provide transparent information about aged care system quality.
