Youth mental health initiatives

We are committed to supporting young Australians to reach their full potential and strengthen their ability to manage their mental health into the future.

Following the 2025 federal election and through the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO), the Australian Government committed more than $750 million over 4 years for new, upgraded and expanded youth mental health services.

Key investments

The commitments include:

  • $211.5 million for 56 new, upgraded or expanded headspace services, including the upgrade of 30 headspace centres to deliver the headspace Plus Model of Care.
  • $490.3 million for a new network of 20 youth specialist care centres (YSCCs) for young people with complex needs who require specialist support. This includes rebranding and expanding the scope of 8 existing Early Psychosis Youth Services (EPYS) to become YSCCs and establishing an additional 12 new centres.
  • $43.3 million to transform the National Centre of Excellence into the National Institute for Youth Mental Health.
  • $13.8 million for 2 new remote community-controlled youth mental health and wellbeing services led by the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO).

These reforms will complement existing services. They will provide higher intensity support for young people whose needs are not being met through primary mental health services but who do not require acute or hospital-based care.
