Our data collections

The health data we hold is valuable to us, private health insurers and researchers. Learn about the data we have on hospitals, communicable diseases, Medicare and more.

Hospital data

We collect data from public and private hospitals:

Private Hospital Data Bureau (PHDB) data

PHDB data contains de-identified information from private hospitals. This includes:

  • patient demographics
  • hospital episodes
  • clinical information
  • hospital charges for all patients in private hospitals.

Private hospitals must submit PHDB data to us about each episode of admitted hospital treatment. PHDB data includes treatments paid for by individual and private health insurers.

Our hospital data resources collection provides information to help hospitals meet their data reporting requirements.

You can view this data in PHDB annual reports.

Hospital Casemix Protocol (HCP) data

Public and private hospitals must submit HCP data. This is submitted for each episode of admitted hospital treatment that health insurers have paid a benefit for.

HCP data is valuable for the private health industry. It includes, for privately insured admitted patients:

  • clinical information
  • demographic information
  • financial information.

The collection is a unique tool for service evaluation and research for both industry and government.

Our hospital data resources collection provides information to help hospitals meet their data reporting requirements.

Communicable diseases data

The National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) coordinates data on more than 70 diseases that present a risk to public health in Australia.

We collate, analyse and publish this information in data reports, including the Communicable Diseases Intelligence journal.

We also publish influenza (flu) surveillance reports fortnightly during the influenza season. This is typically between May and October each year.

Workforce data

The Health Workforce Data site includes a tool that provides access to reports and summary tables about the health workforce in Australia.

Alcohol and other drug survey data

Australian secondary school students alcohol and drug (ASSAD) surveys provide national data every 3 years on substance use by students aged 12 to 17.

Immunisation coverage data

Our immunisation coverage data includes data from a range of providers. This includes data tables, surveys, reports and journals.

Immunisation coverage reports are a version of Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) data that we publish.

Learn more about immunisation and see our immunisation resources.

Medicare data

We keep Medicare statistics, for example about use of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

Services Australia also holds Medicare statistics. These statistics can be helpful for health professionals, researchers, journalists and the general public.

National Integrated Health Services Information (NIHSI)

NIHSI brings together state, territory and national administrative datasets. These include data about:

  • MBS
  • PBS
  • residential aged care
  • National Death Index.

The NIHSI can be used to inform:

  • health planning
  • monitoring
  • evaluation
  • policy development.

We work with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and state and territory health authorities on this.

NIHSI transitioned to the National Health Data Hub (NHDH) in May 2024, and will no longer be updated. Learn more about the NHDH and about health data in Australia.

Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW)

The EDW is one of the largest government holdings of primary care data in the world. It provides secure:

  • data storage
  • reporting
  • analytics
  • visualisation capabilities.

It allows users to access a wealth of data needed for research and policy development.

Our staff, related agencies and other health system users, can access, use and share the data.
