What we're doing about environmental health

We work closely with other Australian Government agencies, regulators, and state and territory governments on policies and programs that aim to improve and maintain health-supporting environments.

Policies and programs

We have policies and programs to reduce the health impact of environmental risks.

We work with the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) and with state and territory agencies to improve consistency in radiation safety and protection across Australia.

We help inform policy to improve environmental health conditions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Advice and guidance

Together with state and territory governments, we coordinate environmental health advice to:

  • the Australian Government Minister for Health and Aged Care

  • Australian Government and state and territory agencies

  • the general community.

We provide advice on the human health aspects of:

Risk assessment support

We provide advice and resources for environmental health risk assessments.

Environmental Health Standing Committee

The Environmental Health Standing Committee (enHealth) works to promote equal access to safe and healthy environments for all Australians.

enHealth is a standing committee of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee that provides advice on environmental factors affecting health.

Guidance for health practitioners

The frequency and magnitude of disasters is intensifying, in part due to the impacts of climate change. Disasters such as bushfires, floods and cyclones are an increasingly major public health problem for Australia.

The Disaster and emergency management for environmental health practitioners guide developed by enHealth assists environmental health practitioners to plan and respond to disasters and emergencies.
