Aged care research and reporting

We undertake research on aged care to understand how the aged care system in Australia is performing and identify any issues. We report every year on the operation of the Aged Care Act 1997. We have also helped to set up the GEN website to provide aged care data and statistics.

About our research and reports

The Department of Health bases policy decisions on research and data. We commission research and collect data to:

  • understand how the aged care system is performing
  • identify any issues
  • make sure we have the information we need to make better decisions

We report every year to Parliament on the operation of the Aged Care Act 1997 and publish research reports on how the aged care system is working.

We have also worked with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) to create GEN — a website that provides detailed data on aged care services in Australia.

The report uses information collected from approved providers through the Aged Care Financial Report (ACFR). It replaces annual reports previously published by the Aged Care Financing Authority.

My Aged Care research and evaluation

The Department of Health commissioned research into how people experience and perceive the My Aged Care initiative.

We asked independent consultancy AMR to find out the thoughts of clients, assessors, service providers and health professions.

The first wave of research was in early 2016 and the second wave was in late 2016 to early 2017.
