Estimates of Australian health system greenhouse gas emissions 2021–22

This report provides baseline estimates of greenhouse gas emissions by the Australian health system. These estimates are foundational to the work to achieve a sustainable, high-quality, net zero health system, as outlined in Australia’s National Health and Climate Strategy.

The estimate includes emissions from:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions, including natural gas and liquid fuels from sources such as stationary fuel use, anaesthetic gases, or fuel use in vehicles owned or leased by the health system
  • Scope 2: Indirect energy-related emissions from purchased energy used by the health system
  • Scope 3: Other indirect emissions, primarily from goods and services purchased by the health system
  • patient travel to and from health facilities.

Estimates will be updated regularly to ensure Australia is on track for net zero health system emissions by 2050.
