Budget 2019–20: Investing in Health and Medical Research – Medical Research Future Fund 10-year investment plan

The Government announced a $5 billion, 10-year investment plan for the MRFF as part of its 2019–20 Budget. This plan continues our support for lifesaving research, gives researchers and industry certainty and direction, and reaffirms Australia’s reputation as a world leader in medical research.

The Government's $5 billion, 10-year investment plan for the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), includes:

  • $1.3 billion to improve patient outcomes by providing:
    •  additional funding for vital clinical trial activity
    •  new research funding to tackle global health issues
  • $792.8 million to build the capacity of Australian researchers by providing: 
    • additional fellowship positions
    • collaboration opportunities with industry
    • continued support develop innovative ideas
  • $1.4 billion to support crucial Australian research missions that have the potential to:
    •  challenge current ways of thinking 
    •  transform medical research 
    •  inspire researchers to be bold 
    •  change the face of medicine
  • $1.5 billion to for research translation that:
    • harnesses research and translates it into real-world benefits for Australians
    • establishes and extends our data infrastructure to support world-class health and medical research
