Supporting Recovery pilot program

We are funding the Supporting Recovery pilot program to provide trauma-informed recovery care for victim-survivors of family, domestic and sexual violence.

If you, or someone you know, need urgent help, please see our list of support organisations and services.

About the initiative

This initiative will trial a new model of care for victim-survivors of family, domestic and sexual violence – trauma-informed recovery care. Services will be embedded in existing services.

Why it is important

This measure supports the ‘recovery and healing’ domain of the National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children 2022–2032, led by the:

  • Office for Women
  • Department of Social Services.

The plan recognises that women and children who have experienced violence must be able to access support for their recovery and healing beyond the crisis response. This will help them achieve long-term improvements to their health and wellbeing.

Goals

This initiative aims to promote sustained recovery and address trauma-related mental health conditions for victim-survivors of family, domestic and sexual violence.

Meeting our goals

To ensure victim-survivors can access support, this initiative brings together the family, domestic and sexual violence service landscape.

In consultation with an expert reference group, we developed the Supporting Recovery Model of Care that will guide service delivery. This group included representation from:

  • the family, domestic and sexual violence and mental health sectors
  • members with lived experience of family, domestic and sexual violence.

The model provides for:

  • local care teams that will
    • be based in an existing local service
    • give case and care management to each victim-survivor
    • consist of trained professionals
    • give warm referrals to trauma-informed service providers
  • Primary Health Networks (PHNs) to contract new services that will provide access to free, long term trauma-informed mental health care
  • An independent evaluation to be done.

This initiative will not replace or duplicate other supports available, including short term and crisis supports. It will complement and extend existing programs.
