Modernising the Prescribed List application process

Learn about the work we are doing to modernise the process of applying to have a product included on the Prescribed List.

What the reform is about

We have modernised the application process and listing pathways for the Prescribed List (PL) to:

  • reduce red tape
  • ensure the application assessment process is fit for purpose
  • ensure proper consideration is given to any application that needs more resource-intensive assessment
  • ensure all listed devices and products are in line with health technology assessment guidelines.

How we will achieve this

The new Medical Devices and Human Tissue Advisory Committee (MDHTAC) and its subcommittees, the Expert Clinical Advisory Groups (ECAGs), will reflect the modernised application process.

We will implement 3 alternative listing pathways:

  • Tier 1 – for low-risk products
  • Tier 2a and 2b – for products requiring clinical or economic assessment
  • Tier 3 – for products requiring a full Medical Services Advisory Committee consideration.

Timeline

The new application process and committee came into effect on 1 July 2023.

The listing pathways are available in the Health Products Portal.
