Dementia-Friendly Communities

Dementia-Friendly Communities is an Australian Government-funded program to build understanding, awareness and acceptance of dementia in the community.

About the program

The Dementia-Friendly Communities program supports the creation and maintenance of:

  • dementia-friendly communities, groups and organisations
  • dementia alliances
  • the Dementia Friends activity
  • a community grant program to help develop local dementia-friendly community activities.

Why it is important

People living with dementia and their carers often feel lonely and isolated. Stigma and discrimination exist towards people living with dementia.

Isolation can lead to mental health concerns including anxiety and depression. In turn, this can exacerbate the symptoms associated with dementia.

With appropriate support, people living with dementia can remain actively engaged and connected with the community.

Goals

The objective of the program is to build greater awareness, acceptance and understanding of dementia in the community.

Who we work with

Dementia Australia has delivered the Dementia-Friendly Communities program since it began in 2016.

The Department of Health and Aged Care funds the program through the Dementia and Aged Care Services Fund.

Status
