Continuing Australia’s COVID-19 medical research response

The Australian Government has announced a $48 million investment into COVID-19 medical research as part of its ongoing COVID-19 pandemic response. Funding is from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).

The $48 million will support research into multiple aspects of COVID-19, including vaccination, treatment and modelling. Funding is from the MRFF’s Coronavirus Research Response.

$33 million is available under the 2021 COVID-19 Treatment Access and Public Health Activities grant opportunity. Projects will be made available through five streams of research to investigate different aspects of COVID-19.

5 institutions will share $15 million from the MRFF 2021 COVID-19 Health Impacts and Vaccination Schedules grant opportunity for:

  • research into the long-term health impacts of COVID-19
  • clinical trials to improve COVID-19 vaccination planning for people who are immunocompromised
  • clinical trials focussing on the effectiveness of combining different COVID-19 vaccines.
