About the measure

This measure will improve palliative care for older Australians living in residential aged care. It will support new and advanced ways of providing palliative care and end-of-life care by state and territory governments.

Why it is important

Caring for people at the end of life is one of the most important parts of a compassionate society. Through this measure, older Australians will receive support from the entire range of health services. This will help them meet their medical and personal needs as they near the end of their life.

Goals

The goals are:

  • to improve palliative and end-of-life care for older people living in residential aged care; and
  • to further enable people to die where they want, supported by increased aged care services

Meeting our goals

The 2018-19 Budget included $57.2 million over six years (from 2018-19) through cost-sharing with state and territory governments.

Status

All state and territory Governments are participating in the measure and implementation is progressing well in each jurisdiction.
