What is the Comprehensive Palliative Care in Aged Care measure

This measure will improve palliative care for older Australians living in residential aged care. It will support new and advanced ways of providing palliative care and end-of-life care by state and territory governments.

Why is the Comprehensive Palliative Care in Aged Care measure important?

Caring for people at the end of life is one of the most important parts of a compassionate society. Through this measure, older Australians will receive support from the entire range of health services. The will help them meet their medical and personal needs as they near the end of their life.

What are the goals of the Comprehensive Palliative Care in Aged Care measure?

The goals are:

  • to improve palliative and end-of-life care for older people living in residential aged care
  • to further enable people to die where they want, supported by increased aged care services

How will these goals be met?

The 2018-19 Budget included $57.2 million over six years (from 2018-19) through cost-sharing with state and territory governments, for this measure.

Status

The Australian Government is currently working with state and territory governments to implement this measure.
