Sport

Participating in sport and physical activity helps Australians to enjoy healthier, happier and more productive lives. It also helps to bring communities together and benefits the local economy. Find out what we’re doing to support community and elite sport in Australia.

Major sporting events

The Office for Sport coordinates the Australian Government’s involvement in the bidding and hosting of major sporting events.

Community sport

Community sport provides the opportunity for as many people as possible to participate in sport. We support community sport through grants and programs.

Elite and high-performance sport

Our champion athletes are role models and a major influence in our goal to be the world’s most active nation.

How we support sport

We work to maximise the health and economic benefits of sport in Australia. We also protect the integrity of sport, support elite athletes and help to bring major sporting events to Australia.

Upcoming major sporting events

Leading into the Olympic and Paralympic Games Brisbane 2032, Australia is hosting a number of events. This green and gold decade of events provides an unprecedented opportunity to inspire the next generation as our athletes strive for excellence in their own backyard.

National Sport Plan

The Office for Sport is currently developing a new National Sport Plan. The new Plan, which will replace Sport 2030, will set a shared vision and priorities for sport and will align and leverage key Australian Government sport strategies and plans. It will also align with state, territory and other sector leaders’ plans.

Public consultation on the new plan has now closed. The consultation was open from 10 November to 7 December.

Further details on the consultation is available on the Department of Health and Aged Care Consultation Hub. Findings from the consultation will inform the development of the Plan ahead of formal Government consideration.
