Pregnancy, birth and baby programs and initiatives

A list of initiatives and programs we fund that are related to pregnancy, birth and baby.

Initiatives and programs

Australian Nurse–Family Partnership Program

The Australian Nurse–Family Partnership Program supports women who are pregnant with an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander baby to help them become the best mum possible. Nurses make home visits to provide guidance during early pregnancy, the baby's infancy and into toddlerhood.

Every Moment Matters – The National Awareness Campaign for Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Women

The Every Moment Matters campaign aims to raise awareness of the risks of alcohol consumption while pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding. It highlights that every moment matters in pregnancy when it comes to drinking alcohol, starting from the moment a person starts trying to conceive.

FASD Hub Australia initiative

This funded website provides current, authoritative and evidence-based information about fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). It has resources for parents and carers, researchers, health professionals and health care providers.

Maternal Health and First 2000 Days/Women’s Health initiative

Maternal Health and First 2000 Days/Women’s Health has been consolidated into the Preventive and Public Health Research initiative under the MRFF 10-year Investment Plan.

Mitochondrial donation

Mitochondrial donation is an IVF-based assisted reproductive technology. It has the potential to prevent mitochondrial disease in babies born to mothers who may otherwise pass on the disease. Learn more about what mitochondrial donation is, why it's important, and how we propose to introduce it.

Newborn bloodspot screening

Healthcare providers offer bloodspot screening for all babies born in Australia. This simple test identifies babies at risk of becoming seriously ill from a rare condition. Screening aims to improve the health of these babies by allowing early intervention.

Pregnant Pause initiative

This funded initiative encourages Australians to go alcohol-free during their pregnancy or the pregnancy of loved ones. It helps mums-to-be build a strong support system. It also raises awareness of the serious effects of alcohol during pregnancy.

Rural Health Outreach Fund

The Rural Health Outreach Fund (RHOF) supports outreach initiatives that improve access to medical specialists, general practitioners (GPs) and allied and other health providers in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia.
