Biosecurity and communicable diseases

Our biosecurity measures reduce the risk of communicable diseases coming into Australia. We work with other government agencies and countries to prevent the spread of serious diseases here and overseas.

Our role in biosecurity

We administer the parts of the national Biosecurity Act 2015 that relate to human health. This includes setting policy for other agencies to carry out at Australia’s international border.

International biosecurity obligations

Australia works with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other countries to manage public health risks, in line with the International Health Regulations 2005.

Importing human remains

Bringing human remains into Australia can pose a potential public health risk. Find out what you need to do to help keep Australia safe.
