How do you catch JEV?

Find out how JEV is contracted in this short video from Dr Sonya Bennett.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JGV) has been detected in parts of Australia. The only way to catch JEV is to be bitten by a mosquito infected with the virus. Mosquitoes become infected when they bite an animal with the virus and then the infected mosquito bites a human. Most commonly, the source animal is a water bird or a pig. The virus is more likely to be present in areas where there are mosquitoes and animals that can carry it. JEV is not present in or transmissible through food products. Commercially produced pork products are safe to consume. For more information visit health.gov.au
