Aged Care Nursing Clinical Placements Program – Pop-up Health Student Experience Part 1

Nursing students participating in the Aged Care Nursing Clinical Placements Program reflect on the practical skills they have acquired and the benefit of gaining real-life experience through the program.

My name's Leigh and I'm currently studying the Bachelor of the Nursing at the University of Adelaide.

I think for me, a big take away from my nursing placement with Pop Up Health has been wound care.

Prior to this placement, I feel like I've had minimal opportunity to practice my wound care skills, but the team at Pop Up Health has some really experienced wound care nurses who've been very happy to pass on their knowledge and importantly also let me have a shot.

On top of that, at the moment, Pop Up is trialling a few new wound care therapies and as a student, it's been awesome to see those trials being conducted as well as the positive outcomes they're already having for patients in the community.

My perspective of nursing in the community has definitely increased.

I've seen the important role that it plays in helping those patients who are very capable of being at home if they're receiving care, and the role that community nursing plays in helping them to stay at home rather than having to be admitted to hospital.

At the moment I'm still working out exactly where I want to be nursing in the future, but it's been really valuable having the placement with Pop Up Health to see how community nursing fits into the broader picture of nursing.
