As a part of the national sport plan, Sport 2030, we funded KPMG to complete a Sports Industry Economic Analysis.

The analysis found that in 2016–17, the Australian sports industry:

  • contributed $14.4 billion to Australia’s gross domestic product (0.8%)
  • generated $32.2 million in sales
  • supported 128,000 full-time jobs (1.4%)

The report identified 3 key segments as areas for potential growth:

  • education and training
  • sports technology
  • media

The report acknowledges that the sport and recreation industry plays an important role in society. Its value is broader than just an economic contribution.
