Inflammatory bowel disease is a term used to describe Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. They are chronic conditions that require complex, long-term care.
The plan’s vision is that ‘All Australians living with inflammatory bowel disease have access to high quality, integrated care to best manage their own health and improve quality of life’.
The plan identifies 8 priority areas:
- A skilled and accessible multidisciplinary workforce
- Access to responsive IBD helplines
- Support general practitioners to more effectively participate in IBD management
- Improved patient knowledge
- Increased investment in research and focus on children with IBD
- Support for practice management software, data and audit systems
- Funding of faecal calprotectin testing and therapeutic drug monitoring of biological therapies
- Explore the potential for effectiveness of medical home – funds bundling
The plan recommends actions to address these priorities.
