National Nursing Workforce Strategy

The National Nursing Workforce Strategy

This strategy sets out a long-term vision for the future of the nursing profession in Australia.

This strategy sets out a long-term vision for the future of the nursing profession in Australia. Achievement of the vision is driven by four priorities with a ten-year time horizon for implementation.

The strategy recognises linkages and interdependencies between the priorities and their associated actions and objectives. The actions within the strategy can also be read through several lenses or grouped according to areas such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, cultural and linguistic diversity, and rural and remote.

Vision

“A sustainable nursing workforce that adapts, innovates and excels to deliver evidence-based health and wellbeing outcomes for all Australian communities.”

Priorities

  1. Enhancing workforce planning, education and regulation
  2. Enabling nursing innovation
  3. Elevating the nursing profession
  4. Delivering a sustainable nursing workforce

These are detailed in the following sections, with each priority providing:

  • objectives that will be achieved where actions are successfully implemented
  • a rationale for the significance of the priority and what it seeks to achieve
  • actions designed to implement priority objectives
  • aims to describe action intent; and
  • responsibilities to identify the range of stakeholders who have responsibility for, or a role in, supporting implementation of actions.
