Bowel screening can save lives.
The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program mails free bowel screening kits to eligible
people aged 50 to 74.
To increase screening rates, healthcare providers can bulk order and store kits to hand out
to patients as part of a check-up.
Have you discussed bowel screening with your patients?
Many patients are more likely to complete the test when it has been discussed with a trusted health professional – you play a key role in helping increase screening participation.
- Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- If found early, it can be successfully treated in more than 90% of cases.
- Bowel cancer often has no obvious early warning signs. The good news is a bowel screening test can detect changes in the bowel long before your patient notices any problems.
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have low participation rates in bowel screening.
Have the bowel screening chat with your patients:
- Register for access to the National Cancer Screening Register HCP Portal at www.ncsr.gov.au.
- Get training on bowel screening, using the portal and how to have conversations with patients.
- Order the free test kits in bulk.
- Hand out kits to eligible patients and record it in the portal.
- Access resources with culturally tailored options, including an expanded range for Indigenous people to promote participation in the program.
