This implementation plan outlines ways to reach the goals of the Australian National Diabetes Strategy 2016–2020.

All states and territories have agreed to the actions outlined in the plan. They have stated that they can develop, expand or modify these actions. The result will be ways to improve the prevention, early detection, management and care of all types of diabetes.

The Australian Government, and states and territories can use the plan to organise cost-effective and sustainable funding. This way, the health of all Australians can be improved. In particular, this plan may help stop people from developing diabetes. For people who already have diabetes, this plan outlines ways to lower the risks of complications related to diabetes.
