Evaluation of the National Breastfeeding Helpline and LiveChat Final Report

The purpose of the evaluation was to assess the appropriateness, sustainability and effectiveness of the services and make recommendations to support improvements to breastfeeding support services in Australia.

In March 2024, the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing contracted Healthcare Management Advisors Pty Ltd to undertake an independent evaluation of the Helpline and associated services. The purpose of the evaluation was to assess the appropriateness, sustainability and effectiveness of the services and make recommendations to support improvements to breastfeeding support services in Australia.

The evaluation found the Helpline and LiveChat provide vital, efficient and cost-effective services. The services are highly valued by consumers, evidenced by survey responses and high rates of repeated use. The evaluation found opportunities to better address the needs of priority populations and understand declining service demand.
