NT government response July 2024

The Northern Territory Government recognises the need for community-based step-down accommodations for people with disability subject to custodial supervision orders, recognising the importance of enabling people to integrate back into the community in a supported and recovery-focused environment. The Northern Territory Government acknowledges that legislative review and amendments will be required to facilitate implementation of this recommendation, along with a determination of available resources, such as acceptable accommodation and monitoring. There are currently 2 specialist forensic disability support facilities in the Northern Territory (consisting of cottages and a secure care facility), staffed by disability support workers trained to assist the needs of clients who need a higher level of support in relation to high-risk behaviour, which can be used to help inform future planning and implementation.

What the Disability Royal Commission said in the final report

The Northern Territory Government should provide supported step-down accommodation in community-based settings for people with disability subject to custodial supervision orders.
