On 8 April 2024, the department received a FOI request seeking access to documents relating to advice sought, and consultations undertaken by, the department regarding the treatment of gender dysphoria in Australia. Documents to be released relate to advice and information on Medicare Benefits Schedule items used for gender affirmation surgery, documents outlining multidisciplinary support considerations for people seeking gender affirmation surgery and research papers prepared for the department by University of Technology Sydney on LGBTQ+ People and Mental Health Services.
