Strengthening Medicare – Modernising primary care

As part of the Strengthening Medicare reforms we are investing in digital health technologies to build a more efficient, connected and collaborative healthcare system.

Investing in a modernised My Health Record

My Health Record will be easier to use and more compatible with existing systems. This will better support health information sharing across care settings.

General Practice Grants Program

The Australian government is supporting general practices and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations with one-off grants of between $25,000 to $50,000. Grants are awarded based on practice size. They support innovation, training, equipment, and minor capital works to:

  • enhance digital health capability
  • upgrade infection prevention and control
  • maintain and/or achieve accreditation.

Strengthening electronic prescribing and targeted digital medicines enhancements

In the 2023–24 Budget, the government committed to improving electronic prescribing infrastructure and services Australia-wide. This requires increasing the capacity of the national prescription delivery service to support:

  • electronic prescribing for high-risk and high-cost medicines
  • the expansion of medication charts into other settings, such as hospital and palliative care.
