Stoma Appliance Scheme Review

The 2023-24 Budget included agreement to a comprehensive review of the Stoma Appliance Scheme (SAS) Schedule. The aim of the review is to ensure products listed are clinically appropriate, priced appropriately and cost-effective. 

Completion of the SAS Schedule Review is expected to result in a revised SAS Schedule reflecting principles of maximising health outcomes for ostomates while maintaining the sustainability of the SAS.

Stoma Appliance Scheme Review terms of reference

The review will be undertaken in 2 phases with the first phase expected to be completed in the first half of 2024 and the second by the end of 2024.

HealthConsult Report – Stoma Appliance Scheme Schedule Review

HealthConsult prepared a report to inform the Stoma Product Assessment Panel’s review of the SAS Schedule. The HealthConsult report considered: 

  • the intent of the SAS 
  • SAS Schedule structure 
  • clinical eligibility for the SAS
  • pricing of products and appliances on the SAS Schedule.
