National Dementia Action Plan consultation

Learn how the voices of people affected by dementia, including their loved ones, will be reflected in Australia’s priorities for action on dementia over the next 10 years.

About the consultation

Public consultation on the National Dementia Action Plan has now closed. Your feedback will ensure the voices of people with lived experience of dementia are reflected in Australia’s priorities over the next 10 years.

Although the consultation has closed, you can stilll read the consultation paper online. The consultation paper sets out:

  • key elements of the proposed action plan
  • proposed objectives, including possible actions and performance measures
  • context of dementia, the people it impacts and the current service system
  • background on dementia and the history of the proposed action plan
  • an overview of how the action plan is proposed to be implemented, governed and monitored.

We sought feedback on the key elements of the action plan, including the proposed:

  • vision
  • objectives
  • actions.

Why it is important

The National Dementia Action Plan is a 10-year initiative between the Australian Government and state and territory governments. This plan has ambitious goals to:

  • improve health and aged care delivery
  • better support carers
  • improve research about dementia
  • encourage the use of dementia research.

The new plan will replace the National Framework for Action on Dementia 2015 to 2019.

Goals

The proposed purpose of the action plan is to:

  • provide a roadmap – setting out where we want to be in 10 years time
  • guide action by Commonwealth, state and territory governments – so policies, services and systems are better integrated for people living with dementia
  • improve services and systems – for people living with dementia, their carers and families
  • enable measurement – of progress against priorities
  • engage, inform and involve the whole community – to achieve a society that’s more understanding and more inclusive of people living with dementia.

We want to put people living with dementia, their carers and families at the centre of all action on dementia.

Status

The proposed actions in this consultation paper are initial ideas. People living with dementia, carers and dementia experts have raised them. Governments haven’t considered the ideas in this paper yet.

Feedback from this consultation will inform the development of the action plan. It is expected to be endorsed nationally in mid-2023.
