Reducing Health Inequities Mission

The Reducing Health Inequities Mission is investing $150 million for research to address inequities in health outcomes. This funding will improve access to quality health services by priority populations.

About the Reducing Heath Inequities Mission

The Reducing Health Inequities Mission is investing $150 million over 10 years from 2027-28 for research to address inequities in health outcomes. This funding will improve access to quality health services by priority populations.

Why it is important

Some population groups in Australia are experiencing greater health challenges than the population average. Australia has a diverse population, and everyone should be able to attain their full potential for health and wellbeing.

The Mission supports health and medical research to improve the health outcomes of priority populations. These include First Nations or diverse communities, people who have a disability or people who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

This Mission will explore and target ways of reducing inequalities for people from priority populations.

The Mission will improve access to quality health services that are appropriate, safe and welcoming for people from priority populations.

Objectives

The objective of the Mission is to address inequities in health outcomes by funding research that supports:

  • a better understanding of the specific needs of diverse individuals and communities
  • the development of inclusive and targeted approaches to support the health and wellbeing of priority populations
  • the generation of high-quality evidence to inform health policy, practice or the health care system, to improve access to quality health care services for priority populations.

Meeting our objectives

The Reducing Health Inequities Mission Expert Advisory Panel will advise the Minister for Health, Disability and Ageing on the strategic priorities for research investment through the Mission.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest from people who would like to become a member of the panel. Applications close on 17 October 2025. Find out how to apply at Expression of interest: MRFF Reducing Health Inequities Mission Expert Advisory Panel.

The panel will provide its advice by developing a Roadmap and Implementation Plan for the Mission. This will include conducting a national public consultation and an international review of the draft Roadmap and Implementation Plan.

The panel will consider the feedback from these consultations as part of the finalisation of the Roadmap and Implementation Plan.

We will publish the Roadmap and Implementation Plan and use these documents to develop the Mission’s grant opportunities. The Mission’s first grant opportunity will award funding in 2027-28.
